 About Us

BC Mental Health & Addiction Services (BCMHAS), an agency of the Provincial Health Services Authority, provides specialized provincial tertiary mental health services to the citizens of British Columbia. Programs include:  Forensic Psychiatric Services, Child & Adolescent Mental Health, Women’s Reproductive Mental Health as well as the Provincial Specialized Eating Disorders Program for children and youth located at the BC Children’s Hospital. The agency also has a significant province-wide role in advancing best practices in mental health through research and knowledge exchange.

PHSA and its agencies are accredited by Accreditation Canada, a national, non-profit, independent organization that helps organizations across Canada and internationally examine and improve the quality of service they provide to their patients and clients. The Accreditation Canada program emphasizes health system performance, risk prevention planning, client safety, performance measurement, and governance.

Onsite Accreditation surveys took place at Children’s & Women’s Mental Health Programs on June 17-21, 2012, and at Forensic Psychiatric Services Commission on June 26-29, 2011.

Surveyors from across Canada toured our facilities, reviewed our processes, and spoke with a variety of individuals. The Accreditation survey assesses our compliance with national standards for quality and safety of patient care.

Children’s & Women’s Mental Health Programs and Forensic Psychiatric Services Commission both received “Exemplary Standing” by Accreditation Canada. Less than 10 per cent of organizations surveyed received this level of standing.
