Internships, Fellowships, Residency & Clinical Experiences
Accredited Occupational Therapy Clinical Placements Our Occupational Therapy Services are independently accredited by the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists. Clinical placements from a wide variety of post-secondary education institutions across Canada are accepted in our adult tertiary psychiatry and geriatric psychiatry program areas. All clinical placements are coordinated through the University of British Columbia’s School of Rehabilitation Sciences. For more details, please e-mail Corinna Oneill.
Accredited Psychology Internships
BC Mental Health & Addiction Services offers one-year clinical psychology internships intended to prepare students for professional practice with a variety of patient populations. At the present time, internship experiences are offered with:
-
forensic clients in in-patient and out-patient settings operated by the Forensic Psychiatric Services Commission;
-
children and adolescents through the BCMHAS Mental Health Programs based at BC Children's Hospital.
Accredited by the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA), our program involves supervised clinical experience at one or more of the following settings over the course of the internship year: Forensic Psychiatric Hospital located in Port Coquitlam; Forensic Regional Out-patient Clinics located in Victoria, Surrey and Vancouver; or our Child and Adolescent Mental Health Program located at BC Children's Hospital in Vancouver. Each fall, up to three interns are selected from a pool of applicants who have completed all course work but a thesis toward a Ph.D. or Psy.D. degree and are enrolled in accredited, academic programs in clinical psychology.
Please note: Effective May 1, 2011 the BCMHAS Internship Program has been placed on Inactive Accreditation Status by the Canadian Psychological Association’s Accreditation Panel for a one year period. This decision was taken by the Panel out of recognition that the BCMHAS Internship Program is currently undergoing significant changes as a result of the imminent closure of Riverview Hospital in June 2012 (formerly the primary rotation site for internship placements) and the development of new internship tracks at Forensic Psychiatric Services and the Child & Adolescent Mental Health Program based at BC Children’s Hospital. Rather than proceeding with an accreditation review that was due to occur in the fall of 2011, the Panel recommended Inactive Accreditation Status to allow BCMHAS additional time to solidify programme changes.
Prior to May 1, 2012 BCMHAS will be providing the Canadian Psychological Association Accreditation Panel with a new Self Study reflecting the changes that have been made to our programme, as a first step toward a full accreditation review.
