 Adult Tertiary Psychiatry

Centre Lawn Building, Riverview Hospital Program Overview

The program is currently in transition as patients are transferred to community facilities developed by the provincial health authorities under the Riverview Redevelopment Project.  For more information on the project click here.

The Adult Tertiary Psychiatry Program at Riverview Hospital provides specialized tertiary acute care and rehabilitation services to BC adults living with a serious mental illness.

Within the program are several sub-programs:

  • General Psychiatry (located at Centre Lawn, wards D2, E2 and E3).
  • Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) (located at Centre Lawn E4)
  • Secure Care Service (located at Centre Lawn D4)
  • Rehabilitation Service (located at Hillside)
  • Refractory Research Service (located at Centre Lawn D3)
Visiting Hours

For all patient units at Centre Lawn, regular visiting hours are 10:00 - 11:30 am and 1:00 - 8:30 pm daily. Visitors are asked to check in at the Information Desk inside the main entrance.

For Hillside, visiting times are flexible, but are normally from 9:00 am to 8:30 pm daily.

Admissions & Referrals

Admission is only by referral from community mental health agencies – that is, inpatient psychiatric units, psychiatric assessment units of general hospitals, and co-management services. Referrals are not to be for long-term residential placement.

There are wait lists for admission to some programs within the Adult Tertiary Psychiatry Program. Admission to most units is usually within one week (depending on the availability of a gender-appropriate bed) and admission to PICU is within 24 hours.
