 Admission Criteria: Geriatric Psychiatry Program

Admission is by physician referral only, and must meet the admitting criteria for Riverview Hospital's Geriatric Psychiatry Program. The program's intake team will review each referral for admission/transfer within one week of complete documentation being received. If necessary, patients accepted for admission/transfer will be waitlisted in chronological order of their referral date. (Note: there currently is no waitlist for admissions to this program.)

Inclusion criteria:

1. Diagnosis:

  • Primary diagnosis if DSM IV Axis I diagnosis
  • Requires specialized/tertiary Geriatric Psychiatry assessments/behaviour stabilization

2. Disability:

  • High degree of disability, i.e. GAF <50
  • Severe and persistent mental disorder

3. Age:

  • Generally 65 and older or otherwise has geriatric psychiatry needs

4. Resources:

  • Unable to be managed in community heath care facilities
  • Local resources (e.g. local Geriatric Mental Health Team, local general hospital/psychiatry services, etc.) have been involved and the patient requires further assessment and treatment
  • Patient is medically stable at the time of transfer to Riverview Hospital

5. Discharge plan:

  • A discharge plan or commitment to place the patient in the community must accompany the request for admission.

Admission will not be approved if the referral is primarily for long-term placement in lieu of a continuing care/special care bed, and/or if a discharge plan or documented commitment to place the patient in the community is not provided.
