Thinking about volunteering at Riverview Hospital? This information will help you decide whether it's the right opportunity for you.

Volunteers at Riverview Hospital must:

  • be at least 19 years of age, preferably with previous volunteer experience or part of a student volunteer program;
  • have passed a Criminal Record Search, to the satisfaction of Riverview Hospital;
  • provide at least two references from paid or volunteer employment, or from school;
  • be able to make a minimum six-month commitment;
  • be willing to abide by the policies of the hospital;
  • understand the English language;
  • be willing to take additional training if required.

The following volunteer assignments are available:

  • Recreation Program Assistant
    • Provides motivation and role modeling for patients
    • Assists in setting up program area
    • Assists in running the program
    • Assists in patient supervision
    • Advises staff of any safety issues, patient needs or other concerns observed
  • Pastoral Care Assistant
    • Provides support in meeting patients' spiritual needs
    • Assists in gathering/reminding patients of the service
    • Assists in transport and assembly of patients
    • Hands out song sheets and assists patients with following the program
    • Assists with setup/takedown/cleanup before and after service
    • Participates in singing or musical accompaniment if desired
    • Advises chaplain of any safety issues, patient needs or other concerns observed
  • One-to-One Patient Visitor
    • Provides regular one-to-one social contact for an individual patient to enhance socialization
    • Accompanies patient on outings on the hospital grounds or into the community
    • Helps patient to participate in programs offered at the hospital or in the community
    • Takes part in activities designed to meet specific needs for a patient
    • Other specialized duties as outlined for specific cases
    • Other (i.e Learning Centre, Apparel Shop, etc)
    • Provides assistance in various departments of the hospital
